I am very glad I got prototypes printed of the look books. There were a few mistakes that need to be fixed before it goes onto final printing.

  1. At the back of the “Fruit Salad’ look book there is an image that is pixilated. I think this may be due to the fact that it is so far cropped in. I will just put a solid colour at the back to prevent this.
  2. As the Resort look book has only 10 pages, there are two blank pages that get printed as part of the spreads. Instead of leaving this to chance/printer, I have decided to design and incorporate them into the book as elements of the book rather than just random white pages.

Overall, I am very happy with the final product and cant wait to see it all together in one big piece at the Grad. Show. Woo HOOooo!

This week I was referring back to the diary entry I made in week 7 about the objectives that I aimed to fulfill. I have made and designed all the mini projects that I listen back a few weeks ago. In the time period I had I feel like I’ve created something that I can and will ddefinitely put in my portfolio.

The items are ready to be sent to print, with one slight glitch. I completely forgot to convert the images to CMYK. After doing so, I sent them to the printer again and am hoping that I receive them back without too many discrepancies from what i see to what i expected.

This shoot went surprisingly better than the previous. No weather problems, quite the opposite actually! I was hoping for some more clouds. I think i achieved the outcome that I intended. Some of the colour balance was slightly different in the photos when I put them all together but that was fixed thanks to my friend, Photoshop. For this look book I decided to use the same font for the informative text as from the previous one to keep it constant. However i did use different fonts for the headings as the previous one wouldn't apply to the look and feel of this look book.

Tue, 11 Oct 2011 12:00:00 -0700 Inspiration for FLIGHTS OF FANCY look book http://anabanana156.posterous.com/inspiration-for-flights-of-fancy-look-book http://anabanana156.posterous.com/inspiration-for-flights-of-fancy-look-book

Aviation, flying galaxy’s and aspirations were the themes in mind when the core LTO Resort range was being designed. This range is aimed at the previously discussed LTO higher end customer. What I have in mind for the photo shoot is something very minimal where the garments take centre stage and speak for themselves. I will try and make the colour palette as minimal as possible without having to resort to a white or black background. I want the photos to be somewhat whimsy in order to promote the idea of luxury and simplicity. While I wanted to incorporate and layer images of galaxies on top of the images I take, I thought that might have been slightly overdone and it wouldn’t be the best for the brand identity to copy what many others have done before.

Despite all the weathers efforts of sabotage, I was able to carry out the photo shoot for the first look book!

The first attempt at the end of last week was at a beach. The sky was miserable and there were only slight glimpses of the sun every now and again. It did not AT ALL match the mood or message I was trying to portray in the photos. Half way though it even started to rain! This was quite the problem as the models were only available that day and if I shot the photos any later I would be way behind schedule. Luckily one of the models offered her backyard/pool area for the shoot and we managed to get some sunny shots between the rain clouds.

Tue, 27 Sep 2011 12:00:00 -0700 Inspiration for FRUIT SALAD look book http://anabanana156.posterous.com/inspiration-for-fruit-salad-look-book http://anabanana156.posterous.com/inspiration-for-fruit-salad-look-book

The first range I am having a photo shoot for is the LTO diffusion line. It consists of swimwear for a younger audience of teens and mid twenties. It caters mostly to a female audience, though it does have some pieces for males. The collection is called “Fruit Salad” and its quite quirky, fun spirited and playful. The shoot would have to be very vivid and fun with lots of energy. I am hoping to shoot it somewhere near the beach or elsewhere in an outside, natural setting. As the price points for this collection are much lower than with the core LTO line, the shoot can have more personality and be more ‘friendly’.

Tue, 20 Sep 2011 12:00:00 -0700 Done things! http://anabanana156.posterous.com/done-things http://anabanana156.posterous.com/done-things

Things moved along nicely this week (a good change from last week!) I have physically made the garment labels and they have already been put to use on some of the garments that have been made. Great to actually see the work being used in situ.

I have also designed the swing tags, according to the mini brief that i received from Lynn. They are little suitcases which go back to the brands themes of travel and having a quirky personality.

I have also finalized the business card design. I was able to find a middle that both me and the client were happy with.

This week wasn't overly productive. I spent most of it doing other assignments that I have fallen behind on. I did however pick up and interesting book called Luxury fashion branding: trends, tactics and techniques by Uche Okonkwo. It gave some good insights in how to differentiate a luxury brand in a market of ‘sameness’.

“While consumer goods like detergent and toilet paper project a sense of reality to their consumers, luxury brands project a sense of fantasy. These contribute to creating  the ‘desire; and the ‘lust’ that propel consumers to seek luxury goods.” (U. Okonkwo)

For my project as a whole I aim to have the following things as outcomes of my work; logo, business card, swing tag, garment labels and a look book for the core LTO line as well as the LTO diffusion line.

Since the logo has been designed and decided upon, my predictions are that the business card, swing tag and garment labels will come along relatively easily. I am still behind on schedule but aim by next week to have them finalized.

In other news for this week, Lynn, the client and designer has showed me the garments that will make up the two look books that I will be shooting and designing. I can now begin to ponder and find visual inspiration and make some mood boards for the photo shoot ahead!

Tue, 06 Sep 2011 12:00:00 -0700 Signifiers and Procrastinators! http://anabanana156.posterous.com/signifiers-and-procrastinators http://anabanana156.posterous.com/signifiers-and-procrastinators

I am a little bit behind on schedule this week. I haven't necessarily managed my time in the best way. I got very distracted and far too involved in the actual logo making  and experimentation. i can be a perfectionist sometimes and as previously mentioned, tend to over think many little decisions. However, the good news from it all is that from a little help and slight decisions from Lynn (the client) I was able to come out with a logo that I was satisfied with. I have come up with two concepts which will be used together or interchangeably. One is the ‘lto’ lettering logo and the other is the accent on the ‘o’ used on its own as a signifier. This came about from thinking of brand recognition e.g. Nike’s tick.

Tue, 30 Aug 2011 12:00:00 -0700 Luxury branding logos; A quick case study. http://anabanana156.posterous.com/luxury-branding-logos-a-quick-case-study http://anabanana156.posterous.com/luxury-branding-logos-a-quick-case-study

This week i have explored different logo concepts and researched a bit more into what differs higher end logos from those which are used for labels that do mass production. I have collected a few higher end logos as inspiration and analysed what they have in common. I have also gathered some logos which are made for a mass market of which the garment price points seem to be lower.

The higher end logos use very clean and simple fonts and stick to a black and white colour palette.  While the other logos use very ornate type faces and bright, bold colours. My aim is to follow the lead of the higher end look and feel.

Tue, 23 Aug 2011 12:00:00 -0700 Interview with Lynn To http://anabanana156.posterous.com/interview-with-lynn-to http://anabanana156.posterous.com/interview-with-lynn-to

Having the client available for a last minute sit down interview session is handy as it will provide me with the answers to most of the questions I was pondering on the week before. As Lynn is my friend and understands that this my major project and is helping me make it my own. She is giving me most of the design leadership. This interview helped me gain some visual direction in which to start designing in.

Can you give me some words that you thin describe the brand and its garments?

 Feminine

 Romantic

 Vintage

 Travel

 International

 Quirky

 Ornate

Timeless romance with a dash of modern grunge. Day to night, casual to corporate depending on the collection.

What do you know of your audience? Who is the LTO woman?

The main LTO woman is likely aged between 20 - 40. Shes part of a higher socio-economic demographic. Price points start at $200. She appreciates quality and the prestige. She respects her appearance but still wants to stand out from the crowd.

Who would you say your competitors were and why?

Aus. designers such as Karla Spetic and Dion Lee. They have a similar market and share a few design qualities as LTO. However LTO is set differently as it is more of a vintage and quirky personality.

Do you have any ideas for what kind of promotional material you would want?

My website is currently in the process of being made, the outlines of it anyway. I think the things that are are completely necessary at this time would be the logo as it goes on the swing tags, garment labels and the look books.

(below is a snippet of some of Lynns sketches and a garment that she has made before.)

Tue, 16 Aug 2011 12:00:00 -0700 The 3 keys! http://anabanana156.posterous.com/the-3-keys http://anabanana156.posterous.com/the-3-keys

The mini topic of research I am pondering this week is the importance of branding and what differentiates a good branding project from a bad one.

While just browsing the internet, sorting my way though Marketing mumbo jumbo, I found a website/blog with a simple list of things that should be taken into consideration when undertaking a project such as mine. The site is called http://www.brandxpress.net/2011/11/dos-and-dont-in-branding-a-startup/ and these are some of the things I picked up and how I related it to my own project;

DEFINE YOURSELF AND YOUR PRODUCT

Before you go out to your customers be specific and honest regarding your purpose. What are you going to provide? Clearly define your product/service in detail. Think what are the benefits for the potential customer, what’s the need that you cover.

LTO provides both higher end garments as well as every now and again creating diffusion lines for a younger audience. I must show a definite difference between the two.

KNOW YOUR CUSTOMERS

… and know them better then anyone else. Know their needs, their habits, their way of life. Every decision you make from the style of your homepage to locations of your ads will depend on who you are targeting. This is not simple task, but it must be done. Start by describing for yourself the person who would be most likely to need your service or product.

I need to have a sit down Q&A session with Lynn in order to define her audience(s) as specifically as possible. What would appeal to them and what are their habits? If LTO was a person, what kind of person would she be?

POSITION YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS

Who are your competitors. How are you satisfying your customers better/different that your competitors

Overview the direct competitors in the Australian Fashion market. How is LTO different? This would be some good questions to go into the Q&A.

Tue, 09 Aug 2011 12:00:00 -0700 ...Branding? http://anabanana156.posterous.com/branding http://anabanana156.posterous.com/branding

I have definitely spent most of this week imagining and mentally planning all the things that could be done and that should be done as a part of my project. However, when it came to actually putting something down on paper or physically putting these thoughts and inspirations into action, I wasn't quite sure where to begin. I felt a bit out of my depth; like being thrown in the deep end without actually knowing which way I need to swim. Getting carried away with thoughts of what could be is one of my problems. I spend a lot of time thinking before putting anything into action, yet this time it is slightly different. Im not really sure where I should begin with this project. Perhaps it is because I have never tackled such a project as a whole.

I feel a solution to this problem is actually gathering some research and doing some case studies. I enjoy hearing opinions from people that differ from my own, as well as picking up things and learning from other peoples successes and mistakes. I will try to do a bit of research into parts of branding to help me out and give me a fresh take on things when I feel a bit out of my depth.

Tue, 02 Aug 2011 12:00:00 -0700 Major Project; a quick synopsis! http://anabanana156.posterous.com/major-project-a-quick-synopsis http://anabanana156.posterous.com/major-project-a-quick-synopsis

My major project mostly deals with branding and photography. I will be working with a friend of mine Lynn To who is starting up her own fashion label, LTO. I am interested in the different thoughts and decisions that may come about and need to be considered when creating a new identity in the fashion market. What also interests me is how the design leadership changes throughout the process as a whole; the decisions that are made by the designer and the decisions that are made by the client.

The reason I chose to pursue this path for my major project is that my aim after uni is to work in the fashion industry and feel that this would be a great addition to my portfolio that can show a variety of my skills and how they come together in one solid, client based project.
